Arthur Athanasiou

Arthur is an Accredited Tax Law Specialist and a widely published writer on taxation issues.
Arthur qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1987, and has held senior taxation and management positions in the transport and motor vehicle industries. He has extensive experience in all areas of direct and indirect taxation, domestic and internationally. He has written many articles and books on taxation, and he regularly appears in the mainstream media, and presents at tax seminars and discussion groups.
Arthur's main area of practice is dispute resolution, particularly in the SME sector, with both the ATO and the SRO. He has many years of experience in complex tax litigation and tax audit negotiations and settlements, as well as broad experience in the taxation of entities, with an emphasis on Division 7A.
Arthur is a National and State Councillor with the Taxation Institute of Australia and chairs the Law Institute's Tax Law Advisory Committee. He is also a Legal Officer in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve, holding rank of Lieutenant.
Below are some examples of Arthur’s experience:
- Frequently appears before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and Federal Courts against the ATO, with the last appearance before the Federal Court resulting in a win against the Commissioner.
- Advises regularly on substantive tax matters including detailed tax planning, structuring and tax avoidance.
- Advises in the administration of tax law, including criminal/white collar crime matters. He has regularly represented individuals charged with criminal offences and deals with the Australian Federal Police and the Victorian Police.
